Sergio Perez and his father, Antonio Perez Garibay, have once again criticized the media over the persistent rumours surrounding the Mexican driver’s 2024 season at Red Bull. Despite Perez signing a new contract for 2025, speculation about his future has intensified due to his struggles alongside Max Verstappen.
One of the recent rumours suggested that Perez would announce his retirement at the Mexican Grand Prix. In response, Antonio Perez Garibay said, “The media that said he would be saying goodbye in Mexico should now at least apologise.”
Though Red Bull’s team advisor, Dr. Helmut Marko, has indicated Perez’s position will be reviewed after the Abu Dhabi season finale, Perez himself has chosen to take the rumours with humour. He explained, “I already laugh at everything they (the media) come up with. It’s hard for a sportsman to understand – everyone can have a bad race or make a bad decision, but in the European media there is an excess of unprofessionalism.”
Adding fuel to the rumours, there have been reports suggesting that Red Bull has signed new team sponsorships and approved the production of 2025 team clothing and merchandise featuring these brands. This could explain why Perez and his father are confident that he will remain with Red Bull beyond 2024.
Antonio Perez Garibay reaffirmed, “Checo will be there for the next two years.” He added that his son intends to retire with Red Bull, calling it “the most professional team at the moment – the world champion team.” According to him, Red Bull is focusing on improving both Perez’s and Verstappen’s cars. With Max Verstappen still in the fight for the championship, Perez’s father is confident that Red Bull will finish the year among the top three constructors.
